Department Provost Research Computing Center About the Department The University of Chicago Research Computing Center (RCC), a unit in the Office of Research, provides high-end research computing resources to researchers at the University of Chicago. It is dedicated to enabling research by providing access to centrally managed High-Performance Computing (HPC), storage, and visualization resources. These resources include hardware, software, high-level scientific and technical user support, and the education and training required to help researchers make full use of modern HPC technology and local and national supercomputing resources. The Office of Research oversees the conduct of sponsored research, research program development, and contract management functions. Job Summary The Research Computing Center (RCC) is hiring a highly motivated Computational Scientist to work closely with faculty and researchers at the University of Chicago on quantum science initiatives and projects. The person in this position will support and advise faculty and researchers using quantum computing/information or simulators and classical High-Performance Computing (HPC) for their research. The successful candidate will join a team of computational scientists who support research computing at the University of Chicago and will have ample opportunity to contribute to enabling science at UChicago, deliver training, and other activities designed to advance quantum information related initiatives and projects. This role develops software to support the data acquisition, ingestion, and integration for research projects. Assists in the development of user interfaces and scalable back-end services to automate and accelerate the scientific output of multi-institutional research projects. Responsibilities Engages a growing community of researchers involved in quantum related applications. Assists researchers with accessing quantum systems and simulators. Coordinates support of quantum science initiatives/projects and offers expertise in estimating required computational resources. Assists researchers with compiling, debugging, optimizing, profiling, and porting applications on RCC classical computing systems, including when simulating the behavior of quantum systems. Assists researchers with improvements in parallel scaling and load balancing of research codes. Assists researchers with data management implementations. Central knowledge resource for faculty and researchers who work in quantum related fields including, but not limited to, quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum network, etc. Consults and interacts with faculty and their research groups on a one-to-one basis to enable them to fully utilize the RCC computational resources and external quantum computing resources for their scientific research. Designs, creates, and presents tutorials, hands-on workshops, and documentation. Takes a proactive approach in communicating the unique research potential of the computing resources. Helps faculty with grant proposals by contributing sections of the proposal that describe the interplay between their research, HPC resources, and external quantum computing facilities. Point person to all Quantum science related activities on campus and elsewhere. Synthesizes those actjivities that could benefit our faculty and researchers. Develops and presents technical training materials and web-based documentation. Ensures timely systems support and updates. Assists in conducting information security assessments and risk analysis of computing environment. Evaluates past and present technologies to help develop new tools. Ensures all the new tools have been through quality control reviews. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Ph.D. in a related field. Experience: Research experience in an area of study related to quantum computing, quantum optics, quantum communications, quantum sensing, or quantum information. Minimum of three years of experience in a UNIX-based programming environment. Installing and tuning scientific applications software on high-performance computers. Benchmarking systems and scientific libraries. Working with vendors to identify and resolve software bug issues. Background with performance analysis and profiling tools. Writing or contributing to grant proposals. Technical Skills or Knowledge: Familiarity with quantum algorithms and gate-model quantum computing. Proficiency with Qiskit SDK and generation of quantum circuits. Knowledge of scientific libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib. Proficiency in Python. Familiarity with Git and Github/Gitlab, Jupyter Notebook. Preferred Competencies Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities. Exceptional oral and written presentation skills. Collaborative, actively sharing knowledge when working with faculty and researchers.
